The North Carolina Museum of History is located in downtown Raleigh in an easy to get to area of town with plenty of parking, especially on weekends. According to the museum’s website, the museum was established in the early 1880s by the publisher of the Raleigh News and Observer and one of his associates. They collected artifacts and items that would help preserve and tell the story of the history of North Carolina and the state’s early beginnings. Eventually all the items were displayed in protective cases, and visitors were treated to a lesson in North Carolina history. In 1992, the museum settled into its current Raleigh location after several moves and relocation’s within the city. Today visitors can travel through time and view any one of the many permanent exhibits featuring items ranging from old artifacts like tools and clothing items to modern sports like basketball and NASCAR racing.

Located just across a walkway is the North Carolina Museum of Science. This multi-level building is packed full of large, open exhibits, topped off with a dome on the top floor which houses “flying” pterodactyls and large dinosaurs. Each floor offers a different habitat to view: one floor has an oceanic theme, one a forest setting, and another floor offers a bug exhibit complete with many live creepy-crawlies which elicits many squeals of surprise and distaste from children and adults alike. The museum offers interactive features like a large rotating earth globe, but perhaps the most favorite and popular interactive feature is the living conservatory with a butterfly room. It’s delightful to walk through this special room to see hundreds of butterflies fluttering around close-by and once in a while, a lucky visitor will experience a butterfly landing on them! Next to the conservatory is a cafeteria where you can grab a bite to eat.

Both of these museums are free to the public and offer special exhibits and showings and festivals including the increasingly popular BugFest at the Science Museum which is a tradition for many Raleigh families to experience, including real bug treats to eat!

i have sold a few on craigslist.com for $40ea. i bought them for $25 and$15 and fixed them up a bit. they were older steel framed road bikes but were pretty nice, i used one for commuting (12 miles one way) and one for a couple triathlons. they were both 10 speeds. you really dont have to spend a ton on a bike to be able to ride. i am now commuting on an older schwinn 14 speed. a nice upgrade from my older 10 speeds. i found this one for $40, but it was thru a friend who gave me an exceptional deal. when buying a used bike make sure it fits you and that the gears work well. ride it and go thru all the gears and make sure it shifts properly. you could even take a used bike to a bike shop and have them tune it up, put new tires on it, brake pads and cables. for a little money you can get a good bike. shop around, be patient. good luck have fun!

Travelers flock by plane, tour bus, automobile and even moped to experience the wonders of the Las Vegas Strip. Their vacation days will usually be carved out with sight-seeing, gaming activities, shopping, club-hopping and show watching. The Las Vegas local, on the other hand, has often become quite adept at finding alternatives to the Strip and all that it entails. The Las Vegas Motor Speedway offers many attractions for all levels of auto racing fans. The speedway, which is located off the I-15 about 12 miles north of downtown, frequently hosts a wide range of events. Novice car racing, auto shows and exhibitions, drifting contests, dirt racing, and NHRA and NASCAR races are some of the exciting events that take place at the speedway. The excitement here can be contagious, and a day at the racetrack can provide a nice change of pace.

Lake Mead National Recreation Center is located 35 miles southeast of the city and is a pleasant spot for a day trip out of town. A nice way to enjoy the lake is to rent a boat or personal watercraft from one of the three marinas at the lake. Houseboats, fishing boats, jets skis and patio boats can be rented by the hour or for the entire day. Don’t forget your sunblock and some tasty snacks to quench your appetite on the lake! There are also places to sunbathe and fish, as well as restaurants and snack bars.

If you like to shop but want to avoid the typical mall experience, check out the Broadacres Swap Meet on any Friday, Saturday or Sunday. Here you will find a unique shopping experience that meshes swap meet and flea market. A main attraction for this location is the diverse festival of foods that are available. You can drink from a freshly cracked coconut, eat chicken roasted over an open flame and cool down with a classic snow cone. There is too much food to mention you will have to see for yourself! Broadacres is located on North Las Vegas Boulevard, past the downtown area.

A distinctive food spot that many locals have come to love and appreciate over the years is Firefly on Paradise Tapas Kitchen and Bar. This restaurant is a couple blocks east of the Strip. It has a lively atmosphere and a vast selection of fun and delicious food. Try the pork empanada, patatas bravas, smoked salmon platter and Nutella-banana sandwiches. Firefly has recently opened a second location inside the Plaza hotel downtown. The view of the downtown Fremont Street Experience is amazing, and the food is the same spectacular fare.

There are many enjoyable options off the beaten path in Las Vegas. When the power slot-pulling wears you out, make like a local and venture off the Strip!
